In keeping with Navajo culture and tradition, the role of Miss Navajo Nation is to exemplify the essence and characters of First Woman, White Shell Woman, and Changing Woman and to display leadership
as the Goodwill Ambassador. Miss Navajo represents womanhood and fulfills the role of “grandmother, mother, aunt, and sister” to the Navajo people and therefore she can speak as a leader, teacher,
counselor, advisor, and friend. In March 1999, the Branch Chiefs of the Navajo government agreed that one of the fundamental principles of the Navajo government should be the preservation of
Navajo culture. It shall be the mission of the Office of Miss Navajo Nation to encourage every Navajo to assist in the preservation of Navajo culture and Miss Navajo Nation will represent the
importance of Navajo Women with respect and honor.
- Certificate of Indian Blood. Must be an enrolled female member of the Navajo Nation.
- Must be 18-25 years of age, never married, have no dependents (children) nor had any children.
- Must speak fluent Navajo and English.
- Must be knowledgeable of Navajo culture, history and tradition.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED by date of ceremony.
- Must have an official birth certificate.
- Must have a VALID / ACTIVE state issued driver’s license.
- Must submit a physical examination for general health status and current drug test.
- Must submit Criminal Background Check.
- Must submit a personal biography with application (For media packets).
- Submit a 500-1000 word essay on "Contributions I would make as the new Miss Navajo Nation."
- Submit three (3) letters of recommendations from any of the following: Local chapter officials, clergy, academic counselors, community leaders or other professionals.
- Submit two (2) 8x10 color photographs (one traditional and one contemporary).
- Must not have previously held the title of Miss Navajo Nation.
- Must not be registered for active duty with any military service.
- Willing to withdraw from college or university for the duration of her reign.
- Must pay a $250.00 non-refundable candidate fee.
- Represent the Navajo Nation as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Navajo people
- Travel reservation-wide, state, national and international levels on behalf of the Navajo Nation
- Permanent employment position for one year with the Navajo Nation
- Receive an annual salary in accordance with the Office of Miss Navajo Nation fiscal year budget
- Health benefits after three months of employment
- Furnished tribal apartment available together with the cost of water, sewer, refuse disposal, electricity, and natural gas without charge to Miss Navajo Nation for the duration of her reign.
- Tribal vehicle assigned to the Office of Miss Navajo Nation for business travel purposes
- Upon successful completion of her reign, Miss Navajo Nation will receive an educational scholarship of $7,500.00 if an Undergraduate or $15,000.00 if a Graduate.
1. The Office of Miss Navajo Nation will assign contestant chaperones. Contestants must travel together and remain with chaperones at all times.
2. The Office of Miss Navajo Nation will provide lodging for qualified contestants. You will be notified on the location. Please arrive early to allow time to settle in before the Contestant
Orientation.
3. Meals will be provided for contestants only from the beginning of the pageant events.
4. The Office of Miss Navajo Nation is not responsible for arrangements such as lodging, meals and/or transportation for other individuals, relatives, friends and families of contestants.
5. The Office of Miss Navajo Nation will provide transportation for contestants for all other pageant activities.
6. As a contestant, dress appropriately for all activities during your role and always be ready for any unscheduled and/or unannounced appearances.
7. Please bring all items needed for your competition. Your parents will not be allowed to bring things
you forgot. Remember, there is no contact with your parents once you arrive for the pageant. NOTE: Don’t forget to bring an alarm clock, sewing kit, safety pins, umbrella, rain coat, drizzle
boots (in case of rain), etc.
8. After pageant commences, contestants will not be allowed to participate in activities that are not sanctioned by the Office of Miss Navajo Nation.
9. Parents, relatives, friends, and sponsors will not interfere with the contestants, Office of Miss Navajo
Nation staff, or pageant judges during the week of the pageant. Any interference will result in immediate loss of points and/or disqualification of contestant.
10. Contestants must dress themselves individually. (i.e. make your own Navajo hair bun, wrap leggings, etc.) THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ADHERED TO.
11. Use of abusive or vulgar language by the contestants or their family will not be tolerated at any time during the week of the pageant.
12. Absolutely no illegal drugs, tobacco, cigarettes or alcohol substances will be allowed during your participation in the pageant.
13. Relatives, friends, and boyfriends will not be permitted to fraternize with or distract contestants during the pageant. You are responsible for appropriate behavior during your role as a
contestant.
CONTEMPORARY SKILLS & TALENT COMPETITION
Contestant will demonstrate one skill and one talent of her choice. Skill examples: Health & Fitness demonstration, Modern Dance, Gymnastics, Aerobic Dance, and Acting/Skits. Talent example:
Singing (blues, classical, modern), Literary Arts, Musical Instruments. A hobby may be used as a talent if it can be presented in an artful or musical form. Lip-syncing is not acceptable. PROVIDE
WRITTEN DESCRIPTION OF SKILL AND TALENT.
- Contemporary Skills - 5 minutes
- Contemporary Talent - 5 minutes
- Evening Gown - 3 minutes
- Impromptu Question - 2 minutes
TRADITIONAL SKILLS & TALENT COMPETITION
Contestant will demonstrate one skill and one talent of her choice. Skill example: Dancing, Acting a Skit, Weaving, Pottery/Jewelry Making, Storytelling, Sign Language, Grinding Corn, etc. Talent
example: Singing, Musical Instruments, etc. A hobby may be used as a talent if it can be presented in an artful or musical form. Lip-syncing is not acceptable. PROVIDE WRITTEN DESCRIPTION OF
SKILL AND TALENT.
- Traditional Skills - 5 minutes
- Traditional Talent - 5 minutes
- Traditional Gown/Attire - 3 minutes
- Impromptu Question - 2 minutes
TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES COMPETITION: (No time limit)
Contestants will be required to demonstrate two or three cultural activities selected by the pageant coordinators as part of the competition such as Butchering, Tsii’yeel Demonstration, Bread
Making (Fry bread, Tortilla, Blue Corn), Corn Grinding, Weaving, Wool Preparations, etc. The purpose of these demonstrations is to acquaint or teach the non-Indians audience the uniqueness of
our Navajo culture. Selected activities are as follows:
- Sheep Butchering Techniques
- Mutton Filleting Techniques
- Fry Bread Making Techniques
IMPROMPTU QUESTION: (2 minutes)
The Impromptu Question demonstrates the contestant’s response abilities. Qualities such as quickness and knowledge of subject will be observed. Impromptu Questions are included in the Contemporary
and Traditional Skills & Talent Competition as well as the Traditional Techniques Competition.
EVENING GOWN COMPETITION: (3 minutes)
The Contemporary and Traditional Skills & Talent will include an Evening Gown/Traditional Attire Competition. Remember, there will be elders in the audience, so be conservative and show
respect. Choose gowns wisely. PROVIDE WRITTEN DESCRIPTIONS OF CONTEMPORARY EVENING WEAR AND TRADITIONAL ATTIRE INCLUDING ACCESSORIES.
- First and foremost, you represent yourself, your family and your community/agency.
- It is mandatory that contestants conduct themselves above and beyond reproach. This means that you will refrain from the use of alcohol, drugs, smoking in public, profane language and/or outburst
of any kind, and unacceptable socializing with a boyfriend (i.e., intimate display of affection, etc) in public. This type of behavior will not be tolerated.
- You are expected to be ON TIME for all functions and events scheduled by the Office of Miss Navajo Nation from September 08, 2009 to September 12, 2009.
- Failure to arrive on the first day will disqualify you as a contestant.
- You are responsible for ensuring that all items to be used during the pageant will be available on the first day of arrival.
- You will be required to use your own items. No borrowing from other contestants. (i.e., clothes, jewelry, shoes, looms, etc.)
- You are responsible for your personal belongings at all times. The Office of Miss Navajo Nation and the Navajo Nation Fair Staff are not responsible for contestants’ personal belongings, loss
of articles, theft or injury.

As a contestant for the Miss Navajo Nation Pageant 2009, I hereby authorize the Office of Miss Navajo Nation to use photographs, representations, or recordings on tape or otherwise for use in
various programs for the Office of Miss Navajo Nation without additional authorization or without the requirement of any compensation of this right.
As a contestant for the Miss Navajo Nation Pageant 2009, I understand that I may be disqualified as a contestant of the Miss Navajo Nation Pageant if I deviate from any of the conditions outlined
in "Pageant Info & Requirements".
